On Out-of-State big business LS Power building a coal fired power plant in NE IA.

Welcome to the “Citizens For Don Shatzer” website.

Don believes we have a responsibility to protect the quality of our air and water for future generations, to promote good paying eco-friendly jobs, to protect citizen’s rights, to build a new energy system for the 21st century and beyond, and to create opportunities for success for all students, especially students who are at risk of dropping out. If these issues are important to you -- then Don Shatzer is your kind of candidate.

Don Shatzer was born in Waterloo in 1948, graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1966, and is lifelong resident of Black Hawk County. He attended State College of Iowa for one and a half years until the death of his father when 19. Don put higher education on hold to step up the plate and help support his family. Ultimately, Don worked for 30 years at John Deere and farmed for 24 years.  Don knows what hard work is and he understands responsibility. He is running for State Representative, House District 22 to put these ideals into action for Iowa citizens.

Don and his wife Linda have been married for 41 years and have two children, Amy and Wade, plus six grandchildren.

Getting to know your candidates is the heart of a representative democracy and it is the key to keeping Iowa on the right track.       Email Don Shatzer at DLSHATZER2@aol.com ; he'll write you back!

ISSUES

Voters deserve choices.  To make informed decisions, voters must know where candidates stand on the issues that matter.  Don keeps his position clear on the issues.

He will never take the position of not being either for or against something.

ENERGY

Don thinks Iowa is the best place in the world to live and raise a family and wants to keep it that way.  Don is committed to following the leadership of former Vice President Al Gore, and Director of the Goddard Space Institute, Dr. James Hansen, along with many other leaders who are calling for a moratorium on the construction of new coal-fired power plants in an effort to save the earth from the catastrophic consequences of global climate change.

“We also need a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store carbon  dioxide.”  Al Gore on the acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize December 10, 2007 Oslo, Norway.

“Saving the planet and creation surely requires phase-out of coal except where CO2 is captured and sequestered.”  Dr. James Hansen, Director of NASA Goddard Space Institute testimony to Iowa Utility Board 2007.

The solutions to our energy needs for the 21st century will begin when the billions of dollars that are sent overseas each year for the purchase of fossil fuels are invested in clean renewable energy, energy efficiency, and thousands of good green jobs for Iowans.

The national average of coal consumption is 52% while Iowa is currently over 80% dependent on coal and this number would increase to nearly 90% if the two new coal plants proposed for Iowa are built.  Any regulation that puts a cost on carbon dioxide emissions will likely hit Iowans harder than most due to our over dependence on coal.  Citizens have a serious choice to make, the only problem, they don’t get to vote.

A vote for Don Shatzer is your opportunity to vote for change of our energy path for the future.

LABOR

Don is a John Deere retiree and member of United Auto Workers Local 838. Don wants more emphasis on pocketbook issues for regular Iowa citizens. He is in favor of passing a fair share proposal, where non-union workers would be required to pay a fee for union services.

Agriculture

Don farmed for 24 years and knows first hand the importance and honor of farming. He is ready, willing and able to fight for the legacy of the Iowa family farm. Not only to level the playing field for smaller farms, but as a quality of life and water safety issue for rural Iowa, he questions the wisdom of grouping very high numbers of animals in a small confined area. He wants a  a moratorium on the construction of concentrated animal feeding operations until some sort of regulatory reform is passed.

Property Owners' Rights

Don is against government supported eminent domain and in favor of property owner's rights. There are many instances of eminent domain laws being abused at the expense of law-abiding and hard-working property owners -- some right here in North East Iowa.  It is a misunderstanding to think that being in favor of honoring the rights of property owners is contrary to environmentalist positions-- this is an issue for all citizens to watch. When it comes to protecting average citizens from government-backed take over of their land-- home owners would not find a stronger advocate that Don Shatzer.

Education

Although Iowa leads the way in early education, Don feels we need to focus our attention on those young people who get lost in the system and feel high school offers no future for them. Our schools need to offer hope to those students who want to continue their education by making it more affordable. There needs to be partnerships between schools and business and industry that will encourage students to graduate from high school by providing job training and apprenticeship programs that train students while they take courses that are relevant to the jobs they are learning.
